Ulice za bicikliste u Beogradu / Critical mass in Belgrade, THIS FRIDAY.

“Streets for cyclists” takes place every last friday of the month at 5pm. We are riding the bike through Belgrade’s city center but it is not a race. Our goal is to promote and create awareness that cycling is healthy and doesn’t cause any pollution or noise, therefore it’s the most efficient and sustainable mean of transport in cities. We want to point out the problems of cyclists in Belgrade because they are one of the most vulnerable groups in traffic.

Ulice za bicikliste is inspired by “Critical Mass“. It occured for the first time in Sweden in the 70’s and in San Francisco in the 90’s and spread out from there. Today critical mass-type rides exist in more than 325 cities, especially in European ones. The biggest event like that takes place in Budapest and attracts tens of thousands of riders. Belgrade has seen a few singular events which were similar to critical mass, e.g. during the annual “Bike Fest”. Ulice za bicikliste on the other hand is going to take place every last friday of the month at 5 o’clock and it will grow steadily. In the end we want to attract several hundred cyclists every month.

Maximilian Sagmüller, EVS-Volonter u nevladinoj organizaciji OSMEH (Blog)

“Riding a bike is not very popular in Belgrade and it can be even dangerous by the lack of infrastructure. I want to make cyclists visible, especially in the old town.”
Maximilian Sagmüller, EVS-Volunteer in OSMEH
